A fresh Bitcoin address for every swap: why it matters

The easiest privacy habit in Bitcoin costs nothing. What reusing an address reveals and how modern wallets solve it.

Every Bitcoin transaction is public forever. If you use one address for everything, anyone who learns it once can see your full balance and every payment you have received or made. It is like putting your bank statement on a billboard just because you gave someone your account number.

What reuse reveals

  • Your total balance at that address.
  • Every amount that ever came in, and when.
  • Links between payments that would otherwise look unrelated.

Your wallet already does the work

Modern wallets are hierarchical deterministic wallets. A long name for a simple idea. From one seed phrase they can generate an endless list of addresses, and they show you a new one every time you tap Receive. They are all yours and they all restore from the same backup.

So the habit is easy. Tap Receive, use the new address and you are done.

For the refund too

When you swap Bitcoin on Swapea, you give a refund address in case the swap cannot be completed. Use a fresh address for that too, not the one you just sent from. That way the refund does not connect your history.

Change outputs

When you spend, whatever is left over usually goes back to a new change address your wallet creates. That is normal and it is good for your privacy. Some wallets also let you choose which coins to spend, which is called coin control. If you hold coins from different sources, keeping them apart avoids linking them in a single transaction. Questions

Is it safe to have lots of addresses?

Yes. Modern wallets generate all of them from the same seed phrase. You back up the seed once and every address is covered.

Which address type should I use?

Native SegWit addresses starting with bc1q are the most compatible and the cheapest to spend. Taproot addresses, starting with bc1p, are newer and also work wherever they are supported.
