Energy and bandwidth on Tron: why sending USDT TRC20 costs you TRX

Tron has its own way of paying for transfers. What energy is, why your USDT transfer burned TRX and how to spend less.

On most networks you pay the fee in the native coin. Tron works a little differently. Transactions use two resources: bandwidth and energy. Simple TRX transfers mostly use bandwidth, and every account gets a small free amount each day. Token transfers like USDT use energy, and that is the expensive part.

Where energy comes from

  • Burning TRX. If you have no energy, the network burns TRX from your wallet to cover it. This is what happens to almost everyone.
  • Staking TRX. Staking TRX gives you energy that recharges over time. Useful if you send USDT often.
  • Renting energy on a marketplace, which can be cheaper than burning TRX if you only send now and then.

Practical tips

  • Keep some TRX in any wallet that holds USDT TRC20, or you will not be able to send it.
  • Sending to a new address that has never held USDT uses more energy than sending to an active one.
  • Check the estimated cost in your wallet before you confirm.

In a swap

When you receive USDT TRC20 from a swap, we pay the sending cost. When you send USDT TRC20 as a deposit, your wallet pays it, so have TRX ready. If you would rather not deal with it, you can swap your USDT to TRX on Swapea first. Visit the Tron page.

Questions

Do I need TRX to receive USDT TRC20?

Why did one USDT transfer cost me more than another?

Sending to an address that has never held USDT takes more energy than sending to one that already holds it. The difference can be noticeable.
